Tonight, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will play host to a star-studded affair, with beloved musicians, visionary artists, esteemed designers, iconic actors, and influential celebrities converging to commemorate The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibit, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion".
With sponsorship from Condé Nast, Loewe, and TikTok, this year’s gala promises to showcase a spectacle of natural grandeur, featuring a blend of archival couture and bespoke creations that embody timeless beauty through elements of nature. The evening's co-chairs include Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Bad Bunny, while the red carpet will be animated by Vogue's hosts La La Anthony, Gwendoline Christie, Ashley Graham, and special correspondent Emma Chamberlain.
This year's theme pays homage to the "sleeping beauties" of fashion, steering away from the Disney fairytale. Within the exhibit, 250 pieces from the Costume Institute’s vast collection will take center stage, some tracing back to the Elizabethan era. The goal is to reimagine delicate designs that can no longer be worn, utilizing CGI, light projections, soundscapes, and video animations. Textiles will be arranged into three thematic zones – land, sea, and sky – broadening conversations on environmental evolution to include the industry's creative responses.
Guests are encouraged to follow a dress code inspired by "The Garden of Time," drawing from JG Ballard's 1962 narrative. The tale unfolds around Count Axel, his Countess, and their fading garden amidst societal unrest, set against a backdrop of crystalline flowers.
Among the expected attendees are the four co-chairs, hosts, and the iconic Anna Wintour, gracing the renowned steps. Additionally, speculations hint at appearances from Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Kendall Jenner, Uma Thurman, Sarah Paulson, Cara Delevingne, and Olivia Rodrigo, as reported by Page Six on April 13th.
